Mom, the Guilty

Do your kids guilt you to death? One of mine is a champ at the guilt complex. She just knows exactly the buttons to push. See, I had scheduled a hair appointment for Saturday the 8th, so I missed part of her game. And then, all the kids wanted the church to have something going on around Halloween, so I stepped up to the plate to organize that, and after that, I got the kids signed up for the football and cheerleading, and her first competition is that weekend, and she. will. not. let. up. on. that.

And don’t even ask how she’s taking this Vegas trip. She accused me of using that to miss her regional competition (for which they aren’t even qualified yet, mind you) and it’s not even the same weekend. Of course, maybe if I dialed up the Excalibur Las Vegas they could fit me in. Even though I have already turned in the form that says if the team makes the cut, we’ll go to regionals. Even thought they are the day after Thanksgiving. And yes, she saw me turn in that form. What. Ev. Er.

That didn’t take long

I just checked out my search engine hits. I do that now and again, just for giggles. I’m now the sixth result for “grits in the crockpot”. Now, just a few days before I wrote my post with that name, I had searched on the same term to get a recipe for same. I didn’t find one exactly like I needed, so I just did it how I needed to do it, and hoped for the best. My recipe worked, and so, apparently, did my post title. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t have paid a search engine marketing firm to get a better result in just three days.

AxcessPoints

Yes, I know that looks like a typo, but it’s not. For once. Because I know I make many, many, typos, ya’ll. I make typos that even the spell checker misses. I am in fact, the typo queen. But enough about me.

Axcesspoints
is a relatively new site, designed to help you keep important information at your virtual fingertips. Think of it as an online safe deposit box. You know you can use one of those to store important papers, and axcesspoints works the same way. You enter information there that can be accessed in an emergency. Make a list of your contacts, type in medical histories, record the location of important documents. Then pay axcesspoints a monthly fee to store it while you get on with your life. If you need it, there it is, if you don’t then that’s even better.

That works.

Moon Sand

right prod 1oooooooh, lookie here, ya’ll! I saw this stuff at WalMart not long ago, but I couldn’t figure it out, and I was a bit rushed (when am I not rushed?), so I just left it. I think I am glad I did, because I have found a better deal on it! Moon sand is like playdoh, only better– it doesn’t dry out, and it doesn’t stick to the carpet or your clothes, and I want some. For me. Although I guess I’m too old for it. But let me tell you, somebody is so getting this moon sand for Christmas here at Chez Many! And I am going to play with it. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of this squishy goodness!

Need a Recipe?

Here’s a site I have been meaning to tel you about for quite a while. I think you home-schoolers will find it very useful. World Cooking has a nice collection of recipes from around the world. And don’t forget the flags. They’d be great printed out for you note-bookers, along with pictures of the foods!

Scout Report

Scouting has been replaced by football. Okay, just kidding. In truth, I told the girls’ leader that they would be back in November, when the season ends. Unless they go to Regionals, in which case, the season will just be starting good.

As for the boys, we have a bigger problem. The guy who said he would be the Den Master is …. not. Not answering phone calls, not returning emails, not organizing meetings, not, not, not. We have a parents meeting next week with the district director to see what we can get going. There is no way I can be the Den Master. I’ve already taken on the position of awards coordinator, and I was supposed to have a helper with that. She’s also…. not.

I have not told he boys all this, of course, but they have asked about scouts. They are looking forward to the camping, the meetings, the tiny little body shop supplies for the Pine Wood Derby cars. And frankly, so am I.

Opining on Essays

So, I’m curious about something. I poked around a site today where you can buy essays and othe academic works, and I want to know what you think of them. The site says it’s “plagiarism free”, but…that really seems like an oxymoron to me. Sure, there’s a tiny-font disclamer at the bottom of the page that says not to use these as your own work, but, ummm?

Yeah.

Okay.

But do you really think someone who pays $10,245 for a thesis (yep, they sell them–I checked) is going to not turn it in as their own work?

I think the site would garner less disapproval if it moved away from custom writing, and concentrated more on helping students become better at essay writing themselves. I know if I assigned an essay and found out the student didn’t write it themselves, I’d flunk them. And I certainly would not want to go to a Doctor of Anything that bought his dissertation.

Help me out here. Am I missing the obvious?

Walk with Me

You know, sometimes I am so proud of my children. In a couple weeks, on te 13 of October, I’m going to be participating in The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. In fact, I am organizing the event for my little town. And the reason I am so proud of my kids is that most of them are jumping in behind me with both feet, ready to do whatever they can. I love that!

Hey, let me ask for your help, too! Could I get you to click this banner, and donate a little but for Alzheimer’s research?

Thanks!

As for me, I’ll probably fill up a good chunk of my new 1GB SD card that day. And, yes! Of course, I’ll share!

Grits in the Crockpot to Go

I have a little story and a recipe. They sort of go together. I’ve been taking grits to church the past couple of Sundays, and apparently, i will be bringing them for the rest of my natural life. It started as a joke, and then everyone just enjoyed them so much, that I am going to continue it.

Here’s how I make them. Using 4 parts water and one part grits, add the water to the crockpot, and stir in the grits. Put the whole thing in microwave and cook it on high long enough to bring it to a boil, then put the crock back in the base, and cook it on high for a while, up to a couple hours, depending on how thick you like your grits. I take mine unseasoned, and let people fix them as they like.

Now, I have a wee issue with my crockpot. It has no handles. Umm, no, let me re-phrase. My old crockpot has no handles. I’m getting this one tomorrow:
33162 full

See the nice handles?? And do you also see the locking lid, perfect for moving a full crockpot from one place to another?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, one word of warning: if you take bacon with your grits, be sure to also take along the best radar detector you can find. You will need it to clock the speed at which the bacon disappears. We clocked out at 6 pounds in 15 minutes, divided by 45ish people. Just sayin’
