I have done school, I have practiced the Christmas program, I have done laundry, I have cleaned, and I am just tired. And also, some of us are getting sick. You can include me in that number. This does not make me happy, because I need to keep teaching, practicing, washing, and cleaning. There is no time now for sick, or for Pigeon Forge cabin rentals and vakay. Did that earlier this month. I Must Press On. In spite of the fact that I want to be in bed already at 9:30pm.

How come everyone gets a nap but me? I know I mentioned yesterday that I am trying to get the kids back on an even keel, and part of that includes an earlier bedtime, and fuller school days. The kids are just thrilled, I tell ya, ab-so-lute-ly THRILLED. And I am dogmeat tired, and have the brain power of a bowl of cold oatmeal by 3pm when it’s finally time that I can think about writing. Oh, and Miss Drama, she does hate the idea of he light being off and also the idea of her own bed and also she “wants to sleep on you”, meaning she wants me to rock her to sleep again. Ooooooooookay. What else am I gonna do, eat bonbons with a hydroxycut chaser?

Seriously, I am tired, and just so you don’t think Pollyanna is writing this blog, I did lose it last night with Drama. Even DH commented, asking me what was up. I was tired of pouring out, pouring out, pouring out. I was angry and I was empty, and I just wanted them all to go to bed and leave me alone, for crying out loud! And then I remembered something almost magical–those same kids who drain me also fill me up. I was so tired I had forgotten to let them refuel me. I met their needs and then got up to do something else, instead of allowing them to meet mine. So I pushed my work aside (yeah, I really need to get to that still), and I picked Drama up and we rocked; snuggled up in that comfy chair, we rocked. And I forgot how long he day had been, and I forgot how tired I was, and I forgot how she was supposed to be sleeping, and I just soaked up that good baby lovin’.

Here’s hoping I remember that lesson before I get waspish and ornery again.

In just a few minutes I will be speeding to Las Vegas to meet up with a gaggle of friends and attend a couple of blogging conferences. Speeding via airplane, that is. Not even a 2006 Mustang can beat that, although if it was a convertible, I would have left a few days ago and driven out, LOL! I do love a fast car. Shhhhh, don’t tell my kids!

Sometimes even we mothers need a little break from reality in the form of a good book, even if it keeps us up late. Such was the case for me the past couple of weeks as I read The Reincarnationist. Now, I have to be upfront and tell you that as a Christian, I believe “it is appointed unto man once to die, and after this, the judgment.” I have to tell you as a human that I am not quite sure what death really means, since we are also told that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and that means the soul never dies. What I am trying to say is that I don’t believe reincarnation is likely, but I can’t rule it out entirely, either. And I am not likely to have considerable amounts of time to devote to research about it in the foreseeable future, or the next 20 years, which ever comes first.

All that said, there is a place for the enjoyment of fiction, just because it is well done, and that was the case for me and this book. I opened it prepared to dislike it, and found myself hooked before the end of the first chapter. The novel begins in modern day Rome, and on the second page, we are suddenly in Ancient Rome, and as a student of history that was it for me; my fight with the book was over right there on page 2. Setting alone: +10.

The writing is masterful, and Rose moves the story along at a satisfactory pace. Not so fast that important details are lost, and never slow enough for boredom and complacency to set in. The ending is quite surprising, and this novel met my one test for “great”. The day after I finished reading it, it was still on my mind, and I was drawing conclusions from it, still fitting the pieces together in my mind. I read maybe one book a year that sticks with me that way. In fact, with my minuscule amount of free time, the simple fact that I stuck with this book to the end is testimony of the author’s story-spinning skill. I know longer have the time and leisure to waste on books that are not top-notch, and I now start many more books than I finish.

This is a family oriented blog, so I have to mention this following bit as a caution. The book is clean except for a few expletives. No, one expletive. Rose uses the f-bomb several times. The first occurrence isn’t until page 162, and it was so oddly placed that I …checked the page number. There is no cussing in scenes where you would expect them to appear, and then when you least expect it, there it is. And only that one, no others at all. It’s almost as if they were sprinkled in as an after-thought in order to move the book up to “adult reading” category, much as some movies do it in order to get a tougher rating, hoping to draw in more interest. I think all told, less than a handful of times, and those were the only parts of the book that didn’t mesh.

I understand that there will be more novels, that this is the first in a series of at least four. I’m looking forward to reading the others.

And I’ve been doing a bit of blog thinking. I’ve split this blog a bit, and you can now read about home schooling and cooking on other blogs. I will continue to post a few things here for awhile that belong other places, but the transition has begun. And I guess here is as good a place to ask as any: Would you rather visit one blog for all the household stuff, momming, schooling and cooking, or does separate work for you? I’m building blogs based on my own reading preferences, which may or not match the majority opinion.

Please tell me that if I get a big ol’ plasma tv that I want for Christmas, and put it high on the wall on one of those fancy plasma mounts where the children cannot reach it AND I keep the remote on my desk that I will not have to ask every day, several times per day “how loud is that tv?”. Whenever I start getting edgy, I know to ask , and invariably it is set at 20, when all the children know it’s supposed to be at 10. And then they turn it down, I stop vibrating, and we can all continue on with our day.

And while I am kvetching about noise, what’s with turning on the kitchen radio and then walking out of the kitchen? Into the livingroom? And plopping down in front of the too-loud television? Hell-Oh? Ding, ding, ding.

I went out Saturday, all by myself. I had a splendid time, just rejuvenating. I got my hair cut and walked around looking at clothes, and then I went to the bookstore. I was amused by some of the clothes I saw. One brand (I think think it was Liz Claiborne???) had a line they called golf, and it truly was golf apparel ladies, as in, it had little golf bags embroidered all over it. Golf bags! I elected not to buy any of those capris, since my little fashionistas already tell me I look like I am about to go play tennis anytime I wear a skort and tennies. Heh. I never thought I’d get to the point that I saw my clothes through my kids eyes, but………if I say to them “I’d prefer you not to wear that, because it would embarrass me”, and they acquiesce, then maybe I can think about whether my clothes embarrass them. Besides, it’s fun shopping for myself and blaming them, LOL!

Hmm, I am aware that I should have a menu plan here today, but alas, I do not. I seem to have slipped a gear where my memes are concerned. I’ll try to do better.

AND! I found out this weekend that my 5 year old does not know the alphabet song! We used to sing it everyday in school, and then all the students learned it, so we stopped. We’ll be starting up again so Batman and Drama can learn it, and then we’ll stop again or awhile. The summer of math is going well. I think we’ll be done with the book by the end of August. I should probably order the new one sometime this week.
