Got a Penelope?

You know, accepting yourself for who you are is the first step in a long journey, and it’s a struggle even for this middle-aged mom sometimes. I watch my girls grow and try to fit in, and I wonder how to help them. Life’s tough, yk? It just is, and I want my kids to know that rejection isn’t always as important as it feels at the time. And that sometimes, being your own best friend is the absolute best option. I’m thinking about taking them to see this movie, Penelope, because of the lessons the main character learns: I like myself the way I am. That is totally a powerful, powerful thing for your teens to see and hear and feel. I like myself. I’m worthy, even with my faults. My self-worth is not dependent on someone else. Being like everyone else isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The movie starts on February 29th, and amazingly enough, my calendar is open on the 1st . Might be about right for some mother/daughter time.
