Why? you ask, if they are paired, you will not have a new looking sock with one that has had much wear. My mom is in a nursing facility and I mark her socks with a sharpie. Therefore they just take each other's socks! So you throw yours away once a month, huh? I hang on to mine much longer. I'm a sad and sadistic puppy. Or I was. No more. I hate this game. And my kids wonder why I won't knit them socks! I keep a basket on my dryer for odd socks. When it gets full I try to pair up whats in there (usually about once a month) There are always some that don't have a mate though, and they go promptly in the trash.
