Even socks that are exactly the same should be paired. Why? you ask, if they are paired, you will not have a new looking sock with one that has had much wear. My mom is in a nursing facility and I mark her socks with a sharpie. I rarely wear socks, but they are matched. Maybe I am fanatical.lol

I buy exactly the same socks, and a bunch...when they come out of the dryer, they go into a drawer, not folded, not matched, no need...open the drawer, pull two, and voila, they always match!

Ah, the sock game! I have a special basket just for socks and the sock game playing. I'm mean I make the kids play too. When my oldest two were younger I took the time to sew the little colors on the toes ... yeah not so much anymore. Stupid socks. Now a sharpie isn't such a bad idea.

Oh, they don't lose their hand-knit socks :)

I though about the color coding, but all the boys wear the same size, and so do the older girls. Therefore they just take each other's socks!

So you throw yours away once a month, huh? I hang on to mine much longer. I'm a sad and sadistic puppy. Or I was. No more.

I know this game. I hate this game.
And my kids wonder why I won't knit them socks!

I keep a basket on my dryer for odd socks. When it gets full I try to pair up whats in there (usually about once a month) There are always some that don't have a mate though, and they go promptly in the trash.
My mom used to color code our socks. She'd sew different colored x's on the toe so that she'd know who was the biggest offender of losing socks.
A more modern solution would be different colored sharpie pens to mark the toes.
