Socks and Other Games
July 9, 2007 12:16 pm UncategorizedToday, I want to talk about the sock game. I play this game with great regularity, as I am sure most mothers do. Only I have 8 kids (yeah, cause TheClone left unmatched socks here) to play it with. I hate the sock game. It takes up a couple hours to play it all the way to completion, only it’s never really played to completion because I always have socks left. Always.
Now, I’ve read advice to just buy same socks. You know what I mean, mega packs of same style socks, that way they all match. And I’ve rejected that advice because *I* happen to like cute, patterned socks. But you know what? *I* happen to be responsible enough to make sure BOTH my socks make it to the hamper. I am therefore responsible enough to have cute socks.
I’m thinking that once I get today’s laundry done, my sock game days are over. I’m passing out the unmatched patterned ones to their owner, throwing out the unmatched plain ones, and the next time I hear “I need socks”, I’ll go buy them. White. Or black. Plain. Done. I’ll use the money I save to buy more cute socks for myself. Or shoes, or yarn, or make-up……….

I know this game. I hate this game.
And my kids wonder why I won’t knit them socks!
I keep a basket on my dryer for odd socks. When it gets full I try to pair up whats in there (usually about once a month) There are always some that don’t have a mate though, and they go promptly in the trash.
My mom used to color code our socks. She’d sew different colored x’s on the toe so that she’d know who was the biggest offender of losing socks.
A more modern solution would be different colored sharpie pens to mark the toes.

Oh, they don’t lose their hand-knit socks
I though about the color coding, but all the boys wear the same size, and so do the older girls. Therefore they just take each other’s socks!
So you throw yours away once a month, huh? I hang on to mine much longer. I’m a sad and sadistic puppy. Or I was. No more.

Ah, the sock game! I have a special basket just for socks and the sock game playing. I’m mean I make the kids play too. When my oldest two were younger I took the time to sew the little colors on the toes … yeah not so much anymore. Stupid socks. Now a sharpie isn’t such a bad idea.

I buy exactly the same socks, and a bunch…when they come out of the dryer, they go into a drawer, not folded, not matched, no need…open the drawer, pull two, and voila, they always match!

Even socks that are exactly the same should be paired. Why? you ask, if they are paired, you will not have a new looking sock with one that has had much wear. My mom is in a nursing facility and I mark her socks with a sharpie. I rarely wear socks, but they are matched. Maybe I am fanatical.lol

Yeah, I keep my socks matched, too. It’s every one else’s socks that make me crazy!

Fanatical, nah. But there are only 3 of ya’ll, and each person’s wash is done separately.
